In most of the world tap water is considered to be healthy to drink. However, it wouldn’t be the first time new findings about this arrive.
Now, before you’re off to the store buying a lifetime supply of bottled water make sure you read this article. Tap water is not poisonous all of the sudden. However, there could potentially be a few health disadvantages you can avoid by making changes like getting a special water filter.
Bottled water also has certain disadvantages, even more so in particular situations.
What’s the deal with tap water?
Every once in a while people find out that things they are doing on a worldwide scale might potentially be bad for their health. Once smoking was recommended by some doctors and radioactive toothpaste got sold.
Maybe one day humans will find the tap water we drink today the same kind of crazy. Some findings might indicate that day isn’t too far off. There are plenty of studies that raise concerns with both tap and bottled water.
Tap water potentially negative for pregnant women
While the fetal system, circulatory system of a fetus (network consisting of blood, blood vessels, and the heart), is much more sensitive to environmental chemicals than a child and grownups, the following research is still interesting.
This study found that for every 0.5 milligram-per-liter increase in fluoride exposure in the womb, a decrease in scores on intelligence tests (IQ) was measured (1). Another research in Canada found something along the same lines (2).
Fluoride is a substance found in tap water all over the world. One of the reasons for this is that there are some potential advantages like dental health to fluoride.
The harmful effects of fluoride may only be for the children of pregnant women during pregnancy. However, it does make you think that the presence of fluoride in your water might not be that good for you.
Potentially harmful plastic particles
A study done reveals that plastic particles were found in 81% of global tap water samples (3).
Ingesting plastic particles may be a risk to human health.
Now, this isn’t only the case with tap water, bottled water contains these plastic particles too.
Polution of the oceans with plastic waste might be one of the reasons this phenomenon is so common around the world.
Is bottled water better than tap water?
Fluoride is also present in bottled water. The exact differences in numbers between your tap water and your bottled water depends on where you live and what bottled water you are choosing.
It’s a hard comparison to make with all the different regions and different bottled water brands. In some countries it’s not recommended to drink tap water at all, in others it’s considered to be healthier than bottled water. To be completely certain you would have to research and compare the water quality of your tap water and the brands of bottled water you are considering.
The easiest way to solve this problem is to get a good water filter that filters out most bad things. This might sound like something very expensive but there is a really good water filter available for a reasonable price.
There is an another important thing to say about bottled water. Heating up plastic water bottles increases the amount of plastic in it (4). It’s pretty common sense to not put plastic water bottles in a microwave or anything like that.
However, even leaving plastic water bottles in the sun or in a hot car can make the water in it multiple times unhealthier.
How bad is it?
Now, all of these things sound pretty scary at first. However, an important question you might ask yourself is “how bad are the consequences of these things in your water?”.
Researching the negative consequences of these things in your tap water is really complicated and expensive.
However, in some situations, like the pregnant women studies, the relatively small time frame of 9 months causes a reduction on IQ-tests. Just imagine what these things can do if you consume them a lifetime.
While it does need further research, most of these harmful things are probably not as bad as other bad habits like bad sleep, smoking,..
Still, if you have the budget for it and care about the long-term health of your family and yourself, you probably want to get a good water filter. These things are not that expensive and can make a difference in health.
Is there a solution?
There are ways to improve the quality of the water you drink. One way to do this is by using a good water filter.
This Berkey filters out things like:
- Heavy metals
- Even viruses (as tiny as they are)
Sadly enough these Berkey filters still need testing in regards to the plastic particles (5). The size of these plastic particles varies. However, these Berkey water filters most likely filter out a great deal of the “bigger” ones.
Chances are pretty big these Berkey filters remove a lot more bad stuff from your water than your town’s municipal water filtering system.
